The existing site was an open restaurant with exposed ceilings and concrete floors. In nine months, it became Napa Bistro and Wine Bar. Inspired by the architecture of the Napa Valley farmhouse, the restaurant unfolds as a series of rooms. The perfect corner booth or paneled private dining room giving varied seating for the cozy lunch or evening setting.
Overview
Inspired by the 1976 Judgment of Paris, our concept celebrates the moment French tradition met California’s emerging wine culture. We envisioned a restaurant blending the timeless character of a Parisian bistro with the relaxed warmth of a Napa Valley farmhouse. Drawing on the earthy palette and creative spirit of the 1970s, the design feels nostalgic yet fresh.
Working within an existing restaurant and a carefully managed budget, we prioritized architectural investments that would elevate the guest experience, balancing custom features with creative sourcing and material collaborations.
A series of intimate spaces combines deep greens, warm woods, natural stone, aged metals, and vintage lighting to create a collected atmosphere. In the main dining room, a sculptural arched ceiling incorporates acoustic plaster, transforming a functional requirement into a defining architectural feature. Custom stained glass, developed with a specialty fabricator in Kansas, features hand blown rondels in an earthy 1970s palette, establishing a signature brand element intended for future locations.
At the bar, a custom mosaic floor achieves a distinctive pattern within budget and lead time constraints. In collaboration with Look Walls, artist Melanie Biehle customized an abstract mural inspired by the Napa landscape, achieving a bespoke feel without the cost of a hand painted installation.
Archival photography, vineyard artifacts, curated artwork, and thoughtfully sourced furnishings complete an interior that balances French sophistication with California ease.
